But its the weekend and I thought you all in addition to the latest Lauren might like some other stuff!
TEN Healthiest FRUITS!
1) Apples
With only 80 calories and 0 grams of fat, it's tough to beat the all-around health boost an apple provides. The primary health benefit of apples is the 3 grams of fiber you get from each one, which carries you a long way toward the 20 grams you are supposed to get each day. Open Letter to Rihanna
Dear Rihanna,
I felt very sorry for you when I heard about and saw the picture of how Chris Brown abused you. I felt sorry that someone that close to you had done something so awful to you. Many of my readers felt the same.
I heard today that you got back with Chris Brown.
This saddens me more than the fact he abused you. It saddens me that someone so talented musically has such low self esteem and self worth that you have CHOSEN to go back to your abuser.
I would hope that you could look at that picture of your broken and bruised face and not go back.
I would hope that you would have helped prosecute him to the full extent of the law.
It looks like neither of those things can happen.
I wish that you would think of Nicole Brown Simpson and what ulimately happened to her by staying close with an abuser. Chris Brown won't change, abusers don't change.
I do hope you will not meet the same fate as Nicole and many others like her who die every year at the hand's of their boyfriend or husband always assuming its something they did to set him off, they can change him, he's sorry, etc. - IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT AND NO HE WON'T CHANGE!
It might be next week or next month or a year from now but it will happen again and maybe next time it just won't be bruises or chipped teeth, it will be your life.

Jason WAHLER calls off engagement!
Jason Wahler, 22, and USC student Katja Decker-Sadowski, 21, have called off their engagement. “I have decided to end my engagement, and it’s an amicable split,” Jason told UsMagazine.com. He explained that “We agreed we are both just too young to be considering getting married right now.” No surprise there. Lauren Conrad tried to tell him as much.
The relationship is very much over as Jason is reportedly shopping around a dating reality show called Jason and the Cougars. That sounds unwatchable.
Thats the best thing that will ever happen to that girl!

Let me get this STRAIGHT.....Jennifer ANISTON is copying LAUREN CONRAD?

Lauren CONRAD officially says Season 5 is the END for MTV'S the HILLS!
“I think there was a time when I let a guy, if not several guys, walk all over me — which I would never let happen now,” she tells Seventeen magazine for its April issue. “I’ve grown to realize you can’t allow yourself to be a victim.”
Unlike her past romances with Brody Jenner and Jason Wahler, Conrad has kept her current relationship with actor Kyle Howard away from the cameras. In fact, the fashion designer won’t even officially call him her boyfriend. “He’s a friend,” she tells the magazine. “I’m a fan of labels, but girlfriend doesn’t always look good on me. Ha!”
MTV star is a label she won’t have for much longer: Conrad tells Seventeen the show’s upcoming fifth season (season 4 bonus episodes will premiere in March) will be her last.
“My biggest thing with the show was that I wanted to walk away from it while it’s still a great thing,” she explains. “I always want to remember it that way. I gave MTV a deadline and said, ‘This is as long as I can do it and stay sane.’ ”
Well, we have heard this before but I do tend to think this is it, the patchup with Heidi probably says this will be it. You know mtv has to put a ribbon on it. I bet they end with Lauren and Heidi back friends, everything wonderful and Lauren STARTING her own line of clothes.

Paris HILTON says she is NOT dating Doug REINHARDT but we all know that does not mean she's not DOIN him!
Despite the rumors, Paris Hilton is not dating Doug Reinhardt from The Hills! Last week E! reported that Doug and Paris spent Valentine’s Day together, and he even gave her a gift to celebrate. That alleged gift was an Andy Warhol portrait of Marilyn Monroe. The two had also been seen hanging out at Paris’ pad to celebrate her birthday. But don’t believe the story!
Because according to Paris herself, she’s still single. Hollyscoop.com spoke to Paris exclusively at Haven: An Evening of Fashion, and she squashed those rumors right away. We asked her where Doug was, and she not only told us, “I don’t know,” but added, “We’re just friends.”So that made us wonder….maybe she was holding out in case there was another chance with her ex Benji Madden. But Paris played it cool when we asked if the two were still friends, saying, “Of course, we’re like best friends. We’ll always be close.”As to whether Paris thinks they’ll be getting back together, she replied simply, “No.”Oh well! There goes that! We kind of liked Paris and Benji together. I had a really rough day today - I got home late last night and realized that my house had been robbed. It was pretty devastating!
I spent most of the morning filling out police reports and going through the house room by room making lists of everything that had been taken. Most of the items are replaceable, but they took off with a few very sentimental things too. Definitely not a good way to start the week.
I’m going to be posting shortly surveillance footage of the intruders with pretty clear shots of their faces.
Seriously is anyone surprised with the crowd she hangs out with that this happened?

Vanessa HUDGENS and Zac EFRON at the 2009 OSCARS!
She looks fabulous, you can see how she should look on a daily basis with just a little effort! Don't love the slick hair on Zac.
So I pulled out the OC dvd last night....
So there was absolutely nothing on tv last night so I threw in the OC season 1 dvd and I have to tell you I forgot what a great show it was, I only watched the first couple episodes but it really was a great show that first season. Funny to see Rachel Bilson and Mischa Barton and the others from so long ago now. Kelly Rowan, the mom on the show was really good too. Its a shame, Josh Schwartz didn't have a better plan long term for the show.

I know some people probably won't love the look, but i like the bangs and the dress is young and fun. Lo looks ridiculous as usual. Click on pic 1, Lauren for 23 has really bad crows feet, she needs to wear shades all the time when she is in the sun and she needs a good eye cream, that is really bad for 23.

Lauren Conrad and her boyfriend Kyle Howard were spotted at Teddy’s Nightclub in Los Angeles Friday night.
They were reportedly on the dancefloor fighting. Lauren’s BFF Lo Bosworth was there to try to defuse the situation. But Radaronline says:
Our spies also tell us the the two were REALLY YELLING, but nobody could make out what they were screaming because the music was so loud.
Lo was pleading with them to calm down, but the two weren’t even paying attention to her, so she finally gave up.
Eventually Lauren had enough of the argument and ran out of the club practically crying, and the two others chased after her!
Since this Lauren Conrad news has to do with actor Kyle Howard, you probably won’t be seeing this on the next season of The Hills as this is the hidden party of the reality star’s life.

When Lucy Liu was escorted to her front-row seat at Hervé Léger this morning, the woman in front of us sighed with satisfaction. “At last. A real celebrity,” she said. The photographers reacted with similar enthusiasm, crowding around Liu and frantically snapping pictures as though a photo of her was the only thing standing between them and cold, cruel death. The frenzy around LL — who, it must be said, is incredibly good-looking in person — completely stole the thunder from the rest of the starlets at the show, all of whom then had to be escorted through the crush of otherwise disinterested media. It’s understandable: Lucy Liu IS a bigger draw than, say, the super low-key Joy Bryant, who smartly got out there first and glued her butt to her seat before she risked losing a limb.
Sophia Bush probably wishes she’d followed Bryant’s lead. Squeezing through the throng with a wince, Bush yelled at her companion for stepping on her coat — honey, better your coat than your feet — and then plopped down next to actress Danielle Panabaker and mouthed, “Oh my GOD.” Perhaps because the Fashion Week fixture skipped last season, Bush commanded the second-most attention once she got her bearings. The photogs must have missed her. Or else they were starved for One Tree Hill spoilers.
Michelle Trachtenberg also inched toward her seat wearing a terrified expression (along with a curious tie-dyed Léger). She seemed especially thin — whereas scrawny-on-camera Jessica Stroup from 90210 surprised us by NOT appearing to be asking Death if he had room at the inn. Though you still could probably pick a lock with her arms, Stroup otherwise looked much healthier than we expected, which is a relief because we like her. She gabbed energetically to reporters, brimming with enthusiasm and adorably wide grins, but her chartreuse bandage dress was gynecologically short.
The last celeb to be shown to her seat was Mad Men’s January Jones, who was standing so close to us at that point that we can definitively say she looked completely dead inside — a defensive reaction to being pummeled in the media scrum, no doubt. We’d shut down, too. In fact we almost did, in solidarity.

Curiously, outside the venue — giving all appearances of waiting in line to gain entry to the show — were Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo, clinging to each other like scrawny life rafts. But the stars of The City were nowhere to be seen inside. Maybe they were actually there on official DVF business (her collection hits the runway today) or on the pretense of ongoing DVF employment. Maybe they decided they couldn’t handle all the fuss and bailed or holed up backstage. Or maybe they were just scared of going up against Lucy Liu. Can’t say we blame them on that one.

A pal tells us the Tamarama singer is embarrassed by the MTV show. “Jay tells everyone that he’s single, and when he goes out, he makes a point of letting pretty girls know he’s available,” says a friend. “He was recently waiting for friends at Rose Bar and told a brunette in skinny black jeans that he does not have a girlfriend.” The pal says Jay did the show to get exposure for his band, but he’s over the whole thing now. “He thinks that Whitney is nice, but they were never really together except for the cameras.”

Cavallari certainly seems to have grown-up from her "Laguna Beach" days, and told Tarts that she's busy going into pilot season and focusing on a "real career."
"I'm definitely enjoying it, it's tough but much more interesting than reality television," she said. "They keep asking me to go on 'The Hills' and I'm like, no thanks." Ouch.
I think on the right show she would be great on tv!

The Real Housewives of Orange County. I've got some dish!
I've been doodling and making commentary on The Real Housewives of Orange County since its second season. I'd pour myself a giant glass of wine, hit pause on my TIVO during one of the housewives' confessional moments, and then do a ten to fifteen minute drawing. Immediately I began hearing from people who worked on the show as well as others who knew those women.
That was season two. Then last year during season three, the flood gates of gossip came pouring in as I heard lots and lots and lots about those gals. And funny enough most of the actual Housewives left comments on this site. It's like the field of dreams--- If you build it, they will come. And comment.So now that the fourth season is underway, I've received a ton of gossip about these gals from very credible sources. I'll say, that I'm simply passing along info that was given to me by a source who shall remain nameless. I'm spreading the wealth here. If you don't wish to read the dish, then don't click on through. If you do.... well..... pour yourself a stiff drink and read on. Remember, I'm just the messanger here. I can't be certain what I'm passing along is 100% fact or not.

About the new housewife Lynne:She is the biggest idiot and DOES look incredibly like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith!) in drag, you will LOVE IT! IDIOT woman...yelled "CUT CUT CUT!" when she wanted to stop the conversation or change what she had said! I heard the producers wanted to strangle her.
About Gretchen:She was "cheating" on Jeff and her BF had pics up on his myspace of the two of them. They were seen together at the SEX (in the city) premiere.
About Simon:He was fired from Fletcher... one of the reasons....special favors for the female clients (comes from the dealership insiders)
About Brianna (Vicky's daughter): She joined the army! Hell of a way to ditch Momma!!

Jason Wahler, ex-boyfriend of The Hills hottie Lauren Conrad is being sued by a tow truck driver for over $100,000 in court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com. The tow truck driver, Jose Alarcon says that in September 2006, Wahler used racial slurs, and interfered with his ability to work. Wahler was arrested for alleged battery for getting into an altercation with the tow truck driver, and another person on the scene.
Alarcon claims in the lawsuit that, "On September 22, 2006, Wahler committed acts of violence, threats of violence, and made racial epitaphs towards the plaintiff intentionally interfering with the plaintiff's constitutional right to work as a tow truck driver which is guaranteed under the Constitution."
Alarcon claims that since his civil rights were violated by Wahler, he is also entitled to an additional 25k. He is also seeking attorney's fees as well.Wahler pleaded no contest to a battery charge and was ordered to rehab and 36 hours of anger management.
I can only hope Jason and his worthless family are left penniless!

Thank god for Obama, we have never had a President who loves to hear himself speak more than Obama! He loves to talk particularly in front of crowds, next time Obama talks or when you see the replay of him rolling out his "Housing" plan today, watch and listen to the crowd, it kind of reminds me of a live studio audience for a tv show. No matter what he says they laugh and cheer and Obama eats it up.
Why does Obama speak in front of large crowds? I suspect its because of the herd mentality, one person cheers, two people cheer, pretty soon everyone cheers even though he has said nothing of substance.
Today he promised to help 4 million people lower their rates and possibly save their homes from foreclosure, 4 million you said? Thats right. If you live in a large city I can pretty much guarantee that your city has atleast 4 million not including the subarbs.
But they all cheer because quite frankly they are not very smart, the same people cheering are the same people who couldn't afford to own the home in the first place.
What am I going to get out of this? Nothing because my mortgage is almost paid in full and I'm not underwater on my house.
What am I going to get out of the stimulus? Nothing again because i'm not unemployed and sitting on my ass, nor do I get medicaid, so thanks Obama for sattling me as an achiever with society with higher future taxes to pay for your welfare stimulus.
The king officially has no clothes.

There are three bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, a den and a detached guesthouse with an additional bedroom and bathroom.

"Spencer is masterminding the whole thing right now. He'll make sure people see him going in and out of a lawyer's office. Then he'll stage fake fights with Heidi for the cameras and talk on the show about getting married too young and pretend he's really conflicted. GIVE Countess LuAnn de Lesseps credit for continuously reinventing herself. The wacky star of "Real Housewives of NYC," notorious for her crotch-grabbing antics in the Hamptons last summer, is now selling herself as an authority on sophistication.
De Lesseps, a part-Algonquin Indian who grew up in the Connecticut suburbs and became a registered nurse before morphing into modeling and marrying into royalty, has penned "Class With the Countess: How to Live with Elegance and Flair," out in April from Gotham. "Social graces have been tossed out the window with the plastic containers," she writes. "And yet, I sense a growing desire for manners, refinement and consideration."
Hopefully, she's given herself a few lessons. Last August, she stunned guests at the Southampton wedding of BlueStar Jets owner Todd Rome to Vanessa Brahms at Nello Summertimes by commandeering the mike from Andy Hilfiger's band, singing two songs and knocking over the drum set.
Then she tried "to make out with women and married men. A pregnant wife caught her husband in the act, stormed off and walked home in disgust," our source said.
Her husband, French aristocrat Alexandre Count de Lesseps, "was seen throwing her to the ground in the parking lot. She wasn't just kissing the married men; she was also grabbing their [crotches]," we reported.

Economic stimulus legislation at the heart of President Barack Obama's recovery plan is on track for final votes Friday in the House and Senate after a dizzying final round of bargaining that yielded agreement on tax cuts and spending totaling $789 billion.
Obama, who has campaigned energetically for the legislation, welcomed the agreement, saying it would "save or create more than 3.5 million jobs and get our economy back on track."
The $500-per-worker credit for lower- and middle-income taxpayers that Obama outlined during his presidential campaign was scaled back to $400 during bargaining by the Democratic-controlled Congress and White House. Couples would receive $800 instead of $1,000. Over two years, that move would pump about $25 billion less into the economy than had been previously planned.
Officials estimated it would mean about $13 a week more in people's paychecks this year when withholding tables are adjusted in late spring. Next year, the measure could yield workers about $8 a week. Critics say that's unlikely to do much to boost consumption. (woo-freakin-ho-$13 bucks)
"The most highly touted tax cut in the original proposal now translates into $7.70 a week for middle-class workers," said Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Millions of people receiving Social Security benefits would get a one-time payment of $250 under the agreement, along with veterans receiving pensions, and poor people receiving Supplemental Security Income payments.
An additional $46 billion would go to transportation projects such as highway, bridge and mass transit construction; many lawmakers wanted more.
Brendan Daly, spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Don Stewart, an aide to McConnell, said final votes are likely in the House and Senate on Friday.
The Obama plan offers a 60 percent subsidy to help unemployed people pay health insurance premiums under the COBRA program and divvies up $87 billion among the states to help them with their Medicaid costs for the next two years. It provides $19 billion to modernize health information technology systems, even though such funding will create few jobs right away. (Thats genius throwing more money at the bums who can't afford health care)
To tamp down costs, several tax provisions were dropped or sharply cut back. A provision popular with Republicans and the big business lobby that would have awarded about $54 billion to money-losing businesses over the next two years was instead limited to small businesses, greatly reducing its cost.
A $15,000 tax credit for anybody buying a home over the next year was dropped; instead, first-time homebuyers could claim an $8,000 credit for homes bought by the end of August. Car buyers could deduct the sales tax they paid on a new car but not the interest on their car loans. (This was the best idea in the whole plan - it would have actually helped housing bottom which is the main problem right now)
But nothing could shake negotiators from insisting on including $70 billion to shelter middle- to upper-income taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax, originally passed a generation ago to make sure the super-rich didn't avoid taxes.
The move is aimed at easing political and logistical headaches for lawmakers who wanted to do the so-called AMT "patch" now rather than later. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that provision will have relatively little impact on the economy.
In late-stage talks, Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., pressed for $8 billion to construct high-speed rail lines, quadrupling the amount in the bill that passed the Senate on Tuesday.
Reid's office issued a statement noting that a proposed Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas rail might get a big chunk of the money.
Scaling back the bill to levels lower than either the $838 billion Senate measure or the original $820 billion House-passed measure caused grumbling among liberal Democrats, who described the cutbacks as a concession to the moderates, particularly Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who are feeling heat from constituents for supporting the bill.
Specter played an active role, however, in making sure $10 billion for the National Institutes of Health, a pet priority, wasn't cut back.
After final agreements were sealed Wednesday afternoon, staff aides worked into the night drafting and double-checking in hopes of officially unveiling the measure Thursday.
This package will not create ten jobs let alone four million! But Obama said create or SAVE didn't he because you can never figure out if one job was saved. What a joke. Chris Brown may have gotten lucky because the charge he was booked on is kinda weak, law enforcement sources tell TMZ. But he's still in big trouble, and Rihanna says it's not the first time he's attacked her.Sources say the Los Angeles County District Attorney kicked the case back to the police for further investigation because evidence that he made criminal threats against Rihanna is kind of thin. Our sources are quick to say he will, however, almost certainly be charged with felony domestic battery, a lesser offense but still serious.
Here's how it went down, according to the police report. After Chris received a text message from a woman who wrote about getting together, an argument erupted. By the way, initially, Rihanna would not tell cops what started the argument.She did, however, tell them that during the argument, he started hitting her. According to the police report, she ordered him to drive her home and "faked a call" to someone, saying things like, "He's dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there." Rihanna told cops the fake call enraged Brown. He said something to the effect of "You are really fu**ed up now. I'm going to kill you." This statement is the basis of the criminal threats charge.At that point, according to the report, Brown allegedly began a violent attack with his fists. At some point, Rihanna took the keys out of the ignition and threw them outside. And there's this. According to the police report, she told cops this was not the first time Brown hit her. She referred to it as an ongoing and escalating abusive relationship.
We're told the criminal threats charge is based on that one statement Brown allegedly made. As one law enforcement source told us, "It's kinda weak, and the D.A. is not going to prosecute a high profile case like this unless it's solid." That's why it was kicked back for further investigation. Given the brutal nature of the attack, which the photos clearly show -- contusions on the face, swollen eyes, cut lip, bloody nose, bite marks on fingers and arm -- a felony domestic battery charge is virtually a done deal. That, however, is a less serious offense than making criminal threats.

Jay Lyon, a native Australian, is hoping to bring his City girlfriend Whitney Port with him to the Australian MTV awards in March. His ex-girlfriend Miranda Kerr is also from Australia, but he’s comfortable returning with a new girlfriend because he’s moved on. And well, Miranda (now dating sex symbol Orlando Bloom) has certainly moved on too. The article below explains:

“So there’s no hard feelings there at all. I care about her, and everything’s good.”
“I want to show her where I come from and my home town, and my friends,” Lyon told AAP on Thursday.
“She’s been here before, but never with an Aussie who can show her the secret spots like I can.
“At this stage it just depends on scheduling.”
If all goes to plan, Lyon’s band Tamarama will perform on the red carpet at the MTV awards and Port will host the show, he said.
Lyon, a former Sydney model who went by the name Brent Tuhtan, dated supermodel Miranda Kerr for four years, before hooking up with Port, who he met while performing on the set of the reality TV show The Hills last year.
Port has since received a spin-off show called The City, following her life working in fashion publicity in New York.
As Port’s boyfriend, Lyon features heavily in the reality MTV series, which premiere in Australia next week.

Fourth, its not up to Whitney to fight Jay's battles, Olivia did her a favor. Lauren Conrad was spotted out at Dominick’s Restaurant in West Hollywood, California on Wednesday night (February 4, 2009)

Doctors in Arizona thought a Phoenix-area woman had a possible brain tumor, but it turned out there was something else penetrating her brain – a worm.
Rosemary Alvarez started experiencing numbness in her arm and blurred vision. She went to the emergency room twice and had a cat scan, but everything came up clear, MyFOXPhoenix.com reported.

It wasn’t until doctors took a closer look at an MRI that they discovered something very disturbing.
“Once we saw the MRI we realized this is something not good,” neurosurgeon, Dr. Peter Nakaji told the news station. “It's something down in her brain stem which is as deep in the brain as you can be.”
Alvarez was wheeled into surgery where Nakaji and his colleagues were expecting to remove a tumor, but they uncovered a worm instead.
On a video of the surgery, Nakaji can be heard chuckling after he made the discovery.
“I'm sure this is a very strange response for the people in the operating room,” he told MyFOXPhoenix.com. “But because I was so pleased to know that it wasn't going to be something terrible.”
Doctors removed the worm and don't believe Alvarez will have any lingering health problems. No one knows exactly where she picked up the worm –- doctors said worms can come from eating undercooked pork or spread by people who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom, according to the report.
“It only takes one person who is spreading it constantly to get a lot of people exposed and some of those people are going to go on to develop this problem,” Nakaji said.
Alvarez, who is now healthy and has resumed normal activities such a playing ball with family in her backyard, said she hopes people learn this lesson from her story.
“Wash your hands, wash your hands,” she added.

Obama summoned centrist senators to the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss a plan to cut more than $50 billion in spending from the measure, which breached the $900 billion barrier in the Senate on Tuesday and appears headed higher.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, as well as Ben Nelson, D-Neb., have tentatively agreed to cutting more than $50 billion from the bill, a Nelson spokesman said, though details weren't yet available.
Their effort is central to building at least some bipartisan support for the bill, which has come under increasing attack for too much spending unrelated to jolting the economy right away.
Obama indicated he's amenable to changes.
"No plan is perfect, and we should work to make it stronger," Obama said at the White House Wednesday. "Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the essential. Let's show people all over our country who are looking for leadership in this difficult time that we are equal to the task."
The cost of the plan expanded past $900 billion after the Senate on Tuesday added money for medical research and tax breaks for car purchases. An effort to add $25 billion more for infrastructure projects—which narrowly failed to advance—is likely to be revived.
The cost could go higher Wednesday if a tax break for homebuyers is made more generous.
Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is pressing for a tax credit of up to $15,000 for everyone who buys a home this year, at a cost of about $20 billion. The pending measure would award a $7,500 tax credit only to first-time homebuyers.
Taken together, the developments prompted a scolding from the Senate's top Republican.
"At some point, we're going to have to learn to say no," said Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "If we're going to help the economy, we need to get a hold of this bill. And making it bigger isn't the answer."
The president rejected some criticisms of the plan: that tax cuts alone would solve the problem, or that longer-term goals such as energy independence and health care reform should wait until afterward.
In remarks at the White House, Obama argued that recalcitrant lawmakers need to get behind his approach, saying the American people embraced his ideas when they elected him president in November.
But Republicans have focused the debate on questionable spending in the bill, pushing down its popularity with complaints about items such as money to combat sexually transmitted diseases, fix problems with the Census and combat the flu.
Some Democrats are griping as well. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., a big critic of the measure, told a Nashville radio station that he "got some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for what I'm doing.... They know its a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill."
Obama has sought each day to ratchet up the pressure on lawmakers, bringing different supportive groups to the White House, scheduling a series of TV interviews, even traveling to a charter school to tout one portion of the bill.
"A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession, a less robust recovery, and a more uncertain future," Obama said in his prepared remarks.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is pressing for a tax credit of up to $15,000 for everyone who buys a home this year, at a cost of about $20 billion. The pending measure would award a $7,500 tax credit only to first-time homebuyers.
Taken together, the developments prompted a scolding from the Senate's top Republican.
"At some point, we're going to have to learn to say no," said Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "If we're going to help the economy, we need to get a hold of this bill. And making it bigger isn't the answer."
The president rejected some criticisms of the plan: that tax cuts alone would solve the problem, or that longer-term goals such as energy independence and health care reform should wait until afterward.
In remarks at the White House, Obama argued that recalcitrant lawmakers need to get behind his approach, saying the American people embraced his ideas when they elected him president in November.
But Republicans have focused the debate on questionable spending in the bill, pushing down its popularity with complaints about items such as money to combat sexually transmitted diseases, fix problems with the Census and combat the flu.
Some Democrats are griping as well. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., a big critic of the measure, told a Nashville radio station that he "got some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for what I'm doing.... They know its a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill."
Obama has sought each day to ratchet up the pressure on lawmakers, bringing different supportive groups to the White House, scheduling a series of TV interviews, even traveling to a charter school to tout one portion of the bill.
"A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession, a less robust recovery, and a more uncertain future," Obama said in his prepared remarks.
